Frequently Asked Questions
How many LEDs does the Powercap Navigator have and how bright are they?
The Powercap Navigator uses a 6 LED system. Two red LEDs put out about 12 lumens to help preserve your night vision while you read charts and checklists. Two white LEDs deliver about 24 lumens for brighter task work, and two LEDs in the brim provide distance and overhead lighting that reaches up to 22 meters for preflight and ground operations.
Why does this hat use red light, and does it help protect night vision?
The red LEDs let you light the cockpit while protecting your dark adaptation, which is why the hat is built for night flying. Red light is far easier on the eyes in darkness than white light, so you keep more of your night vision. The white LEDs are there for detailed tasks when preserving night vision is not a concern.
Is the white light bright enough to read charts and do detailed cockpit work?
Yes. The two white LEDs deliver about 24 lumens of focused task lighting, which is well suited for reading charts and checklists and handling detailed work in the cockpit or on the ground. When you need to protect your night vision instead, switch over to the red LEDs, which give softer light that is easier on dark adapted eyes.
How long does the battery last, and how is it powered?
The Powercap Navigator provides up to 68 hours of runtime, enough to cover many night flights, preflight inspections, and ground operations. The red and white LED systems run on separate battery packs, so each circuit draws power only when you use it. Actual runtime varies with how often you use the brighter white LEDs versus the dimmer red LEDs.
Are the batteries included, and can you replace them?
Yes. The Powercap Navigator comes ready to use with batteries installed, and the cells are replaceable when they run down. The battery compartment sits beneath the brim, separate for the red and white systems. Follow the included instructions for the correct cell type and replacement steps, and keep spares on hand so the hat is always ready.
Where are the light controls and how do you turn it on and off?
The Powercap Navigator uses a button-less design with the switches hidden beneath the brim. The red and white LED systems have separate switches, so you can turn on just the red lights to protect night vision or the white lights for brighter task work. There are no raised buttons on top of the cap to find in the dark.
What is the hat made of, and is it comfortable under an aviation headset?
Yes. The hat is made from 100 percent cotton, so it stays cool during day operations, and the button-less design has no raised buttons that create pressure points under an aviation headset. That makes it comfortable to wear for long sessions while giving you hands-free lighting for night flights and ground work.
What size is the Powercap Navigator, and can men and women wear it?
The Powercap Navigator is a unisex cap designed for adults, so men and women can both wear it. It is meant to suit a wide range of head sizes for comfortable everyday use in the cockpit, on a preflight walkaround, or on the ground. Check our sizing details before you order.
How do you clean the Powercap Navigator?
Because the cap holds LEDs and a battery compartment, treat it as a non-washable electronic item rather than a normal hat. Remove the batteries first, then spot clean the fabric with a damp cloth and a little mild detergent, keeping water away from the lights and battery area. Let it dry fully before reinstalling the batteries.
Is the Powercap Navigator safe to wear in light rain?
Treat the cap as not waterproof. It can handle a bit of incidental moisture during everyday wear, but it should never be soaked or submerged, since water can reach the LEDs and battery compartment under the brim. If it does get wet, let it dry completely before switching the lights on again to protect the electronics.
Who makes the Powercap Navigator, and is warranty support available?
Panther Vision is the manufacturer of the Powercap lighted headwear line, including the Navigator. If you have a question about warranty coverage or a defect, reach out to our team and we can help you confirm the current terms and connect you with support. We stand behind the products we sell.
What else can the Powercap Navigator be used for besides flying?
Plenty. While it is built for night flying, the same hands-free red and white lighting works well for preflight inspections, ground crew maintenance, and any task where you want both hands free. Owners also reach for it for outdoor work, walking at night, astronomy, and other low light jobs where switching between red and white light helps.
