Description
The Navion is a light fixed-wing aircraft that was originally built by North American Aviation in the late 1940s and later by Ryan Aeronautical Company then the Tubular Steel Corporation (TUSCO). With increased interest in aviation following WWII, North American designed the Navion to meet expected demand in the civilian aviation market.
Its design was similar to North American’s P-51 Mustang, so the Navion attracted the attention of the U.S. Army Air Forces. The military ordered 83 of the planes under the designator L-17A for use as ROTC trainers, liaison aircraft, personnel carriers, and cargo carriers.
After Ryan took over the design, they produced the L-17B military version, powered by a 205-horsepower Continental E-185-9 engine. Production on Ryan’s military Navions ran through 1951 with 183 planes delivered to the Air Force for use by the Army and National Guard.
