Description
The Air Force had hoped to replace B-52s with the supersonic B-58 Hustler, but that program experienced significant delays, and the B-52G was upgraded to extend the service life of the bomber. Many modifications were introduced including improved wings, shortened fuselage (the tail gunner was moved to the forward crew compartment) as well as other modifications making the aircraft a formidable nuclear-armed strategic bomber. 193 aircraft were upgraded to "G" models that first entered service in 1959. Interesting fact: In 1992, in compliance with the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty with Russia, most of the B-52Gs were destroyed.
